Concepción Studios is the design studio of San Jose native Patrick Concepción, who specializes in graphics for the music industry. With his knowledge of photography and graphic design, Patrick produces unique pieces for clients ranging from Paul McCartney to Red Hot Chilly Peppers, and Lady Gaga to MUSE. His pieces showcase a wide range of graphic styles and typography.

Northern California Coast Pics

I had a chance to get away up the California coast, Crescent City to be exact. I packed sort of last minute and completely forgot my camera. Needless to say, the scenery was still too inspiring to resist taking pictures with my phone. I’m still impressed at times at the way iphone pictures turn out, especially when using filters. There is a little too much grain on some but I still love the sensation these pics produce. You can always check out my flickr stream for more photo exploration. Enjoy

Jon Contino Hand Lettering & Illustration

Jon Contino is a well known illustrator from New York who has acquired considerable attention for his unique approach to hand-drawn lettering and typography. He combines turn of the century signage aesthetic with a modern-day approach, something I am undoubtedly drawn to. Work like this is immensely inspiring to me and I’m glad hand drawn lettering is making a comeback.

Jon is not only talented in typographic illustrations, as you can see below, he is also a very talented portrait illustrator/caricaturist as well:

Zoran Lucić: Sucker for Soccer Posters

I came across Zoran Lucić’s brilliant Sucker for Soccer posters on designspiration the other day and just in time for Copa America. I know we’ve all seen this style before but it always pulls me in. I love how clean typography and a clean layout is enriched by a little abrasion and distress. The perfect formula to bring harmony and balance to a composition. I’m almost more drawn to the textures filling the negative spaces than the content itself. Also, I’m particularly fond of the half-tone, photocopy effect of applied to the photos. It really brings everything together. Overall, it’s a cool project making retro posters for past and modern day football, err, soccer players. A way to capture these legends in time.

Irene Suchocki Photography

I was browsing flickr when I stumbled upon Irene Suchocki’s photostream. It instantly stopped me on my tracks. Her images look as though time stopped, caught in a modern day take on old, soft focus photography from the turn of the century. The different styles and techniques used, both in-camera and post production make her work really inspiring. She describes her process as:

Faithfully capturing a scene is less important to me than finding that little bit of mystery, evoking a certain mood, or telling a story. Through my photography, I like to explore of the ethereal, the surreal, the whimsical, the mysterious, and the beautiful. I like to consider each photograph a little poem for the eyes.

Ale Paul: Sudtipos

Alejandro Paul is a distinguished font designer and one of the founders of the Sudtipos project, the first Argentinean type foundry collective. He began his trajectory designing fonts and lettering for several top packaging agencies and his work has been featured in publications around the globe, including Communication Arts, Step, Creative Review, Print, Computer Arts, Visual, Creative Arts and Novum. He taught at the Universidad de Buenos Aires and as an art director, Ale was responsible for handling high-profile corporate brands such as Procter & Gamble and SC Johnson, among others.

Ale’s type feels very organic and hand-drawn making it very playful. Yet, it’s not overly ornate like script fonts tend to be. The clean lines make some of the typefaces look almost simplistic. The majority of his foundry has a lot of personality and although I have been seeing more and more of this style of typography, no one pulls it off better than Ale Paul.

Ale has also received three Certificates of Excellence at the Type Directors Club for the the fonts Burgues Script, Adios Script and Poem Script (unpublished).

I Love Dust Design Studio

I Love Dust is a interdisciplinary design studio based in East London with a knack for greatly executed design. I stumbled onto the work of I Love Lust via Grain Edit, who was kind enough to share I Love Lust’s new projects. They had me at “New York, New York” and that was enough for me to pursue seeing more of their typographical series. Lately I’ve been really into this style of design and illustration. I find myself really attracted to the level of detail in the graphics as well as the use of 3-D type, striking colors and rich textures. I wanted to share just some of the projects that stood out to me but I encourage you to check out the rest of their projects as they are very inspiring.

The Art of FLIGHT – Film Trailer

I normally don’t feel comfortable showcasing videos that are obvious marketing ploys but this one is trully inspiring whether you’re a snowboarder, aspiring film-maker or neither. It’s beautifully shot and abundant in emotion. As the music begins to pick up, the action sequences slow down even more creating an intense and epic trailer that is The Art of FLIGHT – Snowboarding Film Trailer w/Travis Rice. Enjoy:

Mauro Duek & Magdalena Pardo

Mauro Duek and Maggie Pardo are an Argentine duo from Haedo, a town just outside of Buenos Aires. I have been following their photography for some time now, mainly because Haedo is where I grew up until the 6th grade. For me, seeing my old neighborhood captured in such a vintage and retro style reinforces a deeper emotional attachment to the photos. I feel as though the images of my fondest memories and daydreams about my childhood are transcended through almost in the way my old photo albums do. Only these photos are more recent. Mauro and Maggie’s photography may have more of a personal appeal, but it is undoubtedly worth sharing. If I didn’t grow up 20 minutes outside of the capital of Buenos Aires, I would say Mauro’s photos feel like screen captures from an ongoing 30 year old romantic movie. The bokeh and blurring effects, together with the framing, are all results from shooting with an old school point and shoot. These are just a few of his explorations:

Mauro’s photography seems to be something of an experimental hobbie. Magdalena on the other hand, is a full time visual designer with a great eye for photography. I really dig the way she experiments with her subject matter and portraiture. She makes it beautiful and timeless. You can see some of them below with a few gems from a playground I used to play at when I was young:

Since we’re on topic, I wanted to include a few other interesting pics as a bonus. These come from Ganorber’s photostream and show a series of photos of my favorite ice cream shop were they still make the best ice cream in the world. When I was young, we would run into the owner of this store at our local market, picking out all the fruit and ingredients he would use to make his gourmet ice cream.
